What are girls made of?  Well this season, it’s sugar, spice and all things nice. That’s right, spring’s hues are the girliest of girly. From mint and lemon sorbet, through to honey and lilac, embrace this season’s mouth-watering ice-cream colours for the sweetest taste of chic. Women have had an age-old love affair with pastel shades. Just the thought of the timeless colour palette brings Marie Antoinette’s frothy wardrobe, the heaving bosoms of English Roses and the delicacies of afternoon tea to mind. The difference this season is for every ruffle and sweetheart neckline, there’s vertiginous heels and sassy hemlines. You see, the pretty pastel look has been given a modern update for 2010. While still reminiscent of other more lady-like eras, it is all about combining the naughty with the nice. Candy on the Catwalk
Let’s start the catwalk, where there was a unanimous thumbs up for sugary pastels. For Christopher Bailey, knotted chiffon skirts and gathered shoulders on the quintessential mac played the pretty background for Burberry Prorsum’s array of sun-bleached colours. It was too good to be ‘tulle’, as design duo Viktor & Rolf took chainsaws to their confectionery numbers and presented a hard take on the pastel look. Peaches, lemons and pale aquas were mixed with flashy metallic tones on Versace’s short and skintight printed pieces. Donatella’s ever-favourite, Christopher Kane used oversized gingham in powder pink, sky blue and lemon on his thigh, as well as mid-riff revealing dresses. The froth was overflowing at Marc Jacobs, where ruffled strands and handkerchief hemlines were combined with satin bra-lets and harem trousers.
Now this look isn’t just reserved for the runway. The high street too has been given a sugar coating, so, you can keep it sorbet-pale against glowing summer skin. The must-have shades to look for are blush pink, pistachio, sky blue, nude, lemon and lilac. Complimenting the ‘underwear is outerwear’ look, choose lace, chiffons, silks and tulles, as well more industrial fabrics such as leather and denim. You also need ruffles, drapes and volume teamed with bows and jewels.  How not to regress to a little girl playing dress-up? Remember this is Sunday best colours for grown ups, so you need to get the balance right. I would recommend choosing a maximum of two pastel shades and mixing with other colours, as well as hard-edged accessories. For the day, bring down the sugar levels, pairing with everyday essentials in urban shades of grey, black or khaki. For those special occasions, intense hues will give your look a futuristic edge, à la Versace.
